The Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology (SAoO) is a national foundation dedicated to
dedicated to quality assurance, research, and continuing education in practical ophthalmology.
The foundation acts both in a supportive capacity and primarily as an initiator of projects and strives to supplement traditional training, teaching, and research activities with new resources and ideas. The foundation is committed to maintaining high quality standards in ophthalmological practice and works to
integrate all innovative ideas and projects into existing structures.
The educational offerings include the annual Congress of the Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology, which focuses on
especially to ophthalmologists, optometrists, Young Swiss Ophthalmologists, medical students, opticians, orthoptists,
practice assistants, anesthetists, surgical staff, and individuals from related fields.
The upcoming 11th SAoO congress will take place from February 17 to 19, 2027 at the KKL Luzern.
In addition, the SAoO has taken the lead in developing a standardized training program for ophthalmic medical practice assistants (OMPA).
