PHACO WET LABS

Topics

The courses focus on practical hands-on surgery training, where state-of-the-art devices, hand instruments and disposables are provided and accepted as the best way for young ophthalmologists to familiarise themselves with the equipment.

This training is conducted on pig eyes, as their characteristics make them very similar to human eyes, and will cover the basics of the following areas:

  • The Physics of Phaco
  • Wound Construction
  • Capsulorhexis
  • Hydrodissection
  • Nuclear Disassembly Techniques and strategies
  • Irrigation/Aspiration
  • Lens Implantation
  • Sealing the Wound
  • Anterior vitrectomy
  • Identifying complex cases and planning strategies
  • Complications and their avoidance

Educational Objectives

By the end of this training, trainees will be able to:

  1. Identify commonly used instruments and equipment for phacoemulsification.
  2. Demonstrate basic manoeuvers typically encountered during phacoemulsification.
  3. Name common complications associated with each step of phacoemulsification.

The courses will be in Lucerne at the KKL cultural centre during the yearly congress organised by the Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology.

This training is affiliated with the official programme of the 2023 SAoO Congress.
